cyberia-l post.
political candidate internet censorship act.
on may 6, senators wyden and lindsey graham introduced the
political candidate internet personal responsibilty act.
it's a "STAND BY YOUR AD" rule for the internet.
It's going to go to the rules committee, chaired by trent lott, where it will be killed by mcconnell, most likely.
so why am i all bent out of shape over it?
those of you who've been reading my rants here for the past 5 years
know i think anonymity is important to the internet.
as the arbitrary aardvark, sometimes i can say things "robbin stewart, esq."
might not want to say. identity theft, cyberstalking, relatives in the old country;
therer are many reasons why people might not want to put their names (addresses, phone numbers, ssns, computer operator license number) on political statements mentioning public officials.
some activists have won important victories about online anonymity in the context of indecency, porn, and harmful to minors, but i felt focusing on political speech
would have less backlash. i recently lost a case on point, majors v abell, in the 7th circuit. split decision between posner and easterbrook.
i'm looking for cocounsel for filing a petition for cert, as my clients are out of funds for filing and printing and such.
the issue is whether mcconnell overruled mcintyre.
the wyden/graham bill is the same kind of fight, but in congress instead of the courts. perhaps cyberians can spread the meme. i don't just want to kill the bill,
i want to tap into the kind of sentiment that made exon/coats a dirty word.
cordially, robbin stewart.
